Cataract removal is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures. A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, impairing vision. This can occur at any age and there are several types of cataracts, but the most common type is a nuclear cataract which generally occurs with advancing age.
A cataract is removed by an ophthalmologist during a 15 minute procedure through a very small incision that requires no stitches. An implant is then inserted where the old lens was to take its place and provide clear vision. Those who had a high eyeglass prescription before cataract surgery will be pleased that they will no longer require thick glasses after the procedure, as the surgeon simply adds the power of the glasses to the lens implant. What many do not realize, however, is that they have a choice when it comes to the type of vision they will have after the cataracts are taken out.

For example, someone who is an avid golfer will likely opt for clear vision at a distance without the need for corrective lenses. Someone else who owns an internet business and spends many hours on the computer will prefer clear uncorrected vision at their computer distance. Yet others who have a variety of vision needs may opt for the new multifocal lens implants.

Would appreciate your reply on the wait times for needed cataract surgery so my drivers license can be newed.

Cataract surgery wait times vary greatly in Alberta. If you are in a hurry the best option would be to see your eye doctor. He or she should be able to assess the urgency and arrange a consult with a surgeon at the earliest possible opportunity. You could be looking at 4 months to 12 months depending on your situation.
