Detection of eye disease made easier with FDT instrument
Many of you have already been tested on our new visual fields machine. Our Humphrey’s FDT (“Frequency Doubling Technology”) Fields Analyser is used to precisely measure a critical area around your central vision, and enables us to detect certain eye diseases more quickly.
Remember the “air puff” test you received at the beginning of your eye exam? We do this to measure your eye pressure. A high pressure in one or both eyes may be a risk factor for glaucoma, an eye disease which causes gradual loss of vision. This vision loss usually shows up in a certain pattern on the FDT at its earliest stages. If this is diagnosed early enough, the eye pressure can be lowered using special eye drops once or twice daily.
Glaucoma is usually picked up during a routine eye exam, since it has no symptoms at all during the early stages. If you demonstrate higher eye pressures, have a positive family history of glaucoma or a suspicious- looking optic nerve, we may recommend an FDT test. The FDT is also useful for picking up brain tumours, strokes, and other neurological conditions.
