“I don’t need to have an eye examination- I’m seeing things just fine!”. Sound familiar? Many of us subscribe to the “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” approach to health matters, including eye and vision care. While easy to do, though, postponing your regular visit with your optometrist may result in serious consequences to your eye health.
A recent study published in the Canadian Journal of Optometry (Fall 2003) found that almost one out of every seven Canadians who came in for a routine eye exam were found to have an eye disease they were unaware of. Two-thirds of people with eye disease had vision of 20/25 or better!
Many types of eye disease have few symptoms in their early stages. A short list of some of the diseases found in the study includes cataracts, corneal degeneration or dystrophy, macular degeneration, retinal holes or detachments and glaucoma. Some of these, such as glaucoma, are particularly worrisome as they may not cause any symptoms until the disease is more advanced.
In view of this scientific study, the benefits of visiting your optometrist regularly are clear. While in most cases annual visits are advisable, your optometrist will make specific recommendations based on any risk factors seen during your eye examination.
