An amazing new development is underway in eyeglass lens technology which may revolutionize the visual experience for those who wear progressives. PixelOptics has developed an eye glass lens that can actually change its prescription as the viewer changes viewing tasks!

Electro-active lenses, unlike progressives, are lenses that dynamically change prescription strengths in response to a cue from the wearer, such as a slight tilt of the head. A small balance-sensitive “tilt switch” is concealed in the temple of the eyeglass frame. When activated, these micro-electronics will cause a change in electric field of liquid crystal molecules within the actual lens. This in turn changes the density of the lens material, resulting in “electro-activation” of the lens’s reading power. Tilting the head back up switches “off” the near reading power, and the lens reverts back to its distance power. This all happens in the blink of an eye. The reported benefits of electro-active lenses are wider distance and near fields of vision (2X wider than conventional progressives), wider intermediate fields of vision (up to 10X wider than conventional progressives) and up to 100% less distortion.
